Energy efficiency is scaled up by cities – not just by using technology & the emerging advanced sources of data, but in all they do – to mitigate climate change, grow economies and improve energy security while delivering massive, economic, catalytic, and environmental benefits.

When energy consumption is high, there is a need for more energy to be produced to meet the high demand. This means cities have to spend more on production costs. If this does not happen, then there is a risk of energy poverty.

The amount of energy used also has an impact on the environment. The more energy is used, the more the environment is polluted due to the increase in pollutants such as CO2 emissions and heat. When less energy is used, there is a cut on the greenhouse gasses and carbon emitted into the air.

Smart advanced digital technology is enabling greater optimization, greater controls, and analytics of energy efficiency. There is hope to efficiently save on energy by ensuring resources are well allocated and used only when there is a need. For instance, if Smart Grid Technology is adopted, there will be a great impact on how much energy is saved and how much CO2 is emitted to the environment.

Data collected can be used to give information on energy use and factors affecting data use making it possible to have changes to the physical environment.
